Dear Friend,

The Pacific Rim is home to the freshest waters and healthiest fish on the planet. For centuries, my ancestors have enjoyed superior health and unparalleled longevity.

The people of Okinawa have repeatedly been shown to be the healthiest and longest-lived people on planet Earth. This has been demonstrated conclusively by the renowned 25-year Okinawa Centenarian Study.

There are many theories behind the superhuman health of those in the Pacific Rim. One theory is the high concentration of coral fortifies the waters and their inhabitants with coral calcium. It is said that the plant life is nourished with these natural life-supporting elements and, in turn, the marine life feeds from these super-foods. The people of the Pacific Rim live off of these fish, and enjoy the benefits they pass on.

One thing is for sure: the benefits of Omega-3 essential fatty acids are known by those who practice both Eastern and Western medicine. We see articles every day touting the benefits of Omega-3 EPA & DHA.

"There is evidence from multiple studies supporting intake of recommended amounts of DHA and EPA in the form of dietary fish or fish oil supplements lowers triglycerides, reduces the risk of death, heart attack, dangerous abnormal heart rhythms, and strokes' in people with known cardiovascular disease, slows the buildup of atherosclerotic plaques ("hardening of the arteries"), and lowers blood pressure slightly.

You can try to eat more fish. The problem is most of the fish you buy in chain stores is farm raised. These fish do not have the same levels of vital nutrients and fatty acids found in the abundant waters of the Pacific Rim. Eating too much fish can actually be hazardous to your health because of the potential for abnormal mercury levels. The dangerous toxins found in polluted waters can be life threatening.

Omega-3 fatty acids are considered essential fatty acids: They are necessary for human health but the body can't make them -- you have to get them through food or supplements.

Also known as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), omega-3 fatty acids play a crucial role in brain function as well as normal growth and development. They have also become popular because they may reduce the risk of heart disease. The American Heart Association recommends eating fish (particularly fatty fish such as mackerel, lake trout, herring, sardines, albacore tuna, and salmon at least 2 times a week.

"...those with coronary artery disease, may not get enough omega-3 by diet alone. These people may want to talk to their doctor about supplements. And for those with high triglycerides, even larger doses could help."

Research shows that omega-3 fatty acids reduce inflammation and may help lower risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and arthritis. Omega-3 fatty acids are highly concentrated in the brain and appear to be important for cognitive (brain memory and performance) and behavioral function. In fact, infants who do not get enough omega-3 fatty acids from their mothers during pregnancy are at risk for developing vision and nerve problems. Symptoms of omega-3 fatty acid deficiency include fatigue, poor memory, dry skin, heart problems, mood swings or depression, and poor circulation.

It is important to have a balance of omega-3 and omega-6 (another essential fatty acid) in the diet. Omega-3 fatty acids help reduce inflammation, and most omega-6 fatty acids tend to promote inflammation. The typical American diet tends to contain 14 - 25 times more omega-6 fatty acids than omega-3 fatty acids.

A Mediterranean diet, on the other hand, has a healthier balance between omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Many studies have shown that people who follow this diet are less likely to develop heart disease. A Mediterranean diet does not include much meat (which is high in omega-6 fatty acids) and emphasizes foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, including whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, fish, olive oil, garlic, as well as moderate wine consumption.

"FISH OIL HELPS TREAT DEPRESSION - Study: Fish Oil Contains Natural Ingredients That Help Treat Depression - Researchers found that omega-3 fatty acids, when fed to piglets, had the same effect on the brain as the antidepressent Prozac: They raised levels of a critical neurotransmitter, serotonin."
